Word processing is used for the creation of text documents. It has replaced the electric typewriter in most offices, because of the ease in which documents can be edited, searched and reprinted.

What is a E-mail?
The word E-mail is short for Electronic Mail. E-mail is the way of sending and receiving messages over the Internet. It is cheaper and faster than the traditional postal system.

Internet

The Internet is a network of computers from all over the world linked together by telephone lines, fibre optic cables and satellite. Millions of users from all around the world use the Internet.

To connect on the internet one needs 4 things:
  1. A Computer System
  2. A Modem
  3. A Telephone Line
  4. An Internet Service Provider (ISP)
What is a modem? (modulator-demodulator)
A Modem is the hardware with which the computer is connected to the Internet via the telephone lines / cable.

                                                 

What is ISP?
An Internet Service Provider is a company with whom anybody wanting to connect to the Internet.

What is a web browser?
Web Browser displays web pages form any computer on the web.

                                               

The World Wide Web (WWW) is the most popular part of the Internet. It contains millions and millions of pages of information. The Browser converts the special HTML (HyperText Markup Language) codes that are used to create a Web Page. Every page has a unique address this is called Uniform Resource Locator (URL). 

Homepage is the first webpage that loads in your browser when you open it. In the Search Engine you can type a keyword and it will search through all the webpages and the world and give you a list of sites (hyper-links ) that match it so that you can jump directly to the page.




Spreadsheets

Spreadsheets

A spreadsheet is a program for a processing number and calculations. Spreadsheets developed as computerized simulations of paper accounting worksheets.  A cell in a spreadsheet may contain: 
  • Label-heading or a title
  •  Value-a number
  • Formula-used for performing calculations
Disadvantages of spreadsheets:
  1. One must learn how to use this program
  2. It's not portable
Advantages of spreadsheets:
  1. Use formulas to make calculations an easy task
  2. Changing a number on which a calculation was made, will automatically adjust the result

Functions in Spreadsheets:
  • SUM; To add up the values in a group of cells 
  • MIN; To find the smallest value inn a group of cells
  • MAX; To find the largest value in a group of cells
  • AVERAGE; To calculate the average value of a group of cells
  • COUNT; Counts the number of cells that contain a number
